The P90 and the Heckler & Koch MP7 are both PDWs designed for similar roles. The P90 offers a higher magazine capacity (50 rounds vs. 20-40 rounds for the MP7) but is generally considered larger and heavier.. The FN F2000 assault rifle, first produced in 2001, uses the same safety and trigger mechanisms as the P90. Ultimately NATO testing in 2002-2003 of the 5.7mm round and the Heckler & Koch 4.6mm round suggested the 5.7mm was superior, but Germany and several others rejected standardization, effectively halting replacement of the 9mm round.

Heckler & Koch MP7 Unveiled in 2001 as a PDW competitor to the P90, the MP7 uses 4.6x30mm high-velocity ammo for assault rifle-like firepower in a submachine gun frame.. In 1993, FN redesigned the P90 and its magazine to chamber the new SS190 round. It would be a decade before NATO finally evaluated the P90 and its 5.7mm round. In 2002, NATO trials began pitting the FN 5.7x28mm round against the rival 4.6x30mm round developed by Heckler & Koch.
