Pressurized engine oil enters the camshaft at the second bearing journal oil galley. The oil from the camshaft travels through a check valve and then a filter. The check valve keeps oil in the system after the engine is turned off. The oil then enters a spool valve that controls the flow to the CMP vanes in the actuator.. Learn about GM's variable valve timing (VVT) system and how the CMP actuator controls valve overlap and timing for enhanced engine performance.
We get this question quite a bit regarding the oil flow / circulation in a Pontiac V-8 engine. The lower hole on the outside of the block where the oil filter adapter bolts to is the "oil out" hole. The oil comes up from the pump and out of this hole into the filter. The oil then leaves the filter and goes back into the block in the top hole. Note the white arrows in the attached drawing.. Learn about the oil flow diagram for a Chevy 454 engine, understanding the path that oil takes to lubricate and cool the engine components. Find out how oil is distributed and how to ensure proper oil flow for optimal engine performance.
