The 81 SRX was very problematic and Yamaha even went so far as to give customers a monetairy credit if they returned it and purchased a new Vmax540LC. The 1981 one was the first "wedge" design that was then replaced in 83 with the Vmax540LC. As far as any turned in 81's according to Yamaha they were destroyed.. A few guys have told me that the 81 440 SRX is faster then the 540, I was lookin at the blown up 81 440 on my bench and want to put together the 440 motor again but reluctant because you cant get pistons and they blow up.. yamaha had this stuff pretty well engineered to begin with. after all they were the top of the line racers for all of.
