In A View of the Woods by Flannery O'Connor we have the theme of control, identity, independence and conflict. Taken from Everything That Rises Must Converge the story is narrated in the third person and deals with the relationship between a grandfather (Mark Fortune) and his youngest grandchild (Mary Fortune Pitts).. Analysis "A View of the Woods" is perhaps the most brutal of the nine stories in this volume, with its chronicle of the violent murder of a child, who inadvertently becomes her grandfather's nemesis and metes out the wages of his grossly narcissistic sin. The third-person narrator stays mostly with Mr. Fortune throughout the story.

A View of the Woods By Flannery O' Connor, first published in Partisan Review Mr. Fortune, an industrious old landowner with his eye toward the development of his country town, spends all of his time with his favorite granddaughter, Mary Fortune.. a battered mulberry-colored Cadillac, on the embankment that over looked the spot where the work was going on.
